Implementation of Standardization Consulting Program for Developing Countries

With the increase in regional standardization activities all around the world, Asia-Pacific region countries have been voicing their position to international standardization such as ITU through APT activity.

However, many countries in the Asian-Pacific region, except perhaps for Korea, Japan, China, and few others, are faced with difficulty in participating in the standardization activity due to lack of technology, capital, and manpower.

For this, Japan has been co-hosting technical workshop with APT with the purpose of bridging the digital divide and standardization gap for the developing countries.

Korea has also provided to developing countries many physical supports such as training programs and setting up information access centers.

Based on TTA's 20 years of know-hows and experiences, TTA launched standard consulting program this year to assist developing countries to improve standardization capability.

The recipient country was selected through APT, and standardization research development, policy, system, regulations, standardization process, standardization forum, and ITU/APT correspondence consulting services have been provided.

Also, technical workshops, with participation by standardization experts from Korea, held in October to focus the program on key technical areas selected by the recipient country.

In addition, representatives from each recipient countries will be invited to Korea in November for a technical visit of domestic standardization activity and related industry to provide them with a full spectrum of consulting program.

TTA expects that this program, along with collaborative project with ITU, will contribute greatly to bridging the standardization gap for the developing countries.
