WiBroTM adopted as the ITU-R IMT-2000 Standard

Korea's WiBro technology and its standardization effort has finally paid off. At the 2007 ITU Radio Assembly meeting (RA-07) held at Geneva on October 18th, WiBro (Mobile-WiMAX) standard, a TTA developed standard that was reflected in the IEEE 802.16e standard, was adopted as one of ITU's 3rd generation international mobile telecommunication standards.

Since June 2003, TTA has operated PG302 (Chairman: Hong Dae-hyoung) in pursuit of WiBro standardization and with participants from over 60 TTA members and about 300 WiBro experts, PG 302 has developed a total of 14 WiBro standards and technical reports including WiBro physical layer and medium access control layer standards.

In addition, efforts for international standardization, in cooperation with IEEE 802.16, has resulted in reflecting WiBro physical layer specification in the IEEE 802.16-2004 (IEEE 802.16d) standard in October 2004 and WiBro medium access control layer specification in the IEEE 802.16e-2005(IEEE 802.16e) standard in December 2005.

Hence, IEEE 802.16d/e, containing WiBro specifications, was proposed to ITU as one of IMT-2000 technologies under the name of ‘OFDMA TDD WMAN' at ITU-R WP8F Meeting in January 2007. With that, an in-depth technical verification analysis of the WiBro technology was kicked-off at ITU-R WP8F meeting held in May in Tokyo Japan and at the August meeting held in Seoul.

With the result reached at the August WP8F special meeting in Seoul, consensus was made to propose WiBro for adoption as the international standard at the RA-07, which was to be held in mid October in Geneva.

Through these endless standardization effort, WiBro technology was finally adopted as an international standard at the RA-07 held in October 2007 with every Member States' approval, despite China's opposition. With this splendid achievement, Korea has once again proven itself to be one of IT powerhouse and paved a way for Korea to lead the future 4th generation mobile telecommunication standardization.

Over 20 Korean delegates from Ministry of Communication, Radio Research Laboratory, TTA, ETRI, Samsung Electronics, KT, SKT and over 800 radio-telecommunication standardization experts from all over the world attended the RA-07 meeting.
