Virtual International Symposium on ICTs and Climate Change
Co-hosted by Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and sponsored by TTA, ‘Virtual International Symposium on ICTs and Climate Change - The Power of ICTs to Save the Planet -’ was held on September 23 at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Seoul. This international symposium is an online videoconference attempted for the first time by KCC and ITU. For this symposium, a welcoming speech by Choi See-joong, Chairman of KCC, a congratulatory speech by Kim Hyeong-guk, Chairman of Presidential Committee on Green Growth and a keynote speech by Hamadoun Toure, Secretary-General of ITU were given online. Also, speakers from 9 countries, such as Korea, USA, UK, Japan, China, Switzerland, Sweden, Vietnam and India, gave online presentations. 580 people from 48 countries participated in the symposium in person or logging on to watch the live broadcast. Organizing this symposium as a videoconference, the physical traveling cost of approximately KRW 900 million was saved. Furthermore, this videoconference reduced 319 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to the emission by 60 people in Seoul over the period of one year. With this successful completion, this symposium demonstrates that videoconference is a feasible solution to combat climate changes. Videoconference will be continuously publicized as the best practice for low-carbon green growth project.
