Korea leads NGN international standardization at ITU

TTA (Secretary General Hong-Koo Kim) announced that the NGN-GSI (Global Standard Initiative) standardization meeting, which drives international standardization of NGN (next-generation network) by ITU, was held from October 24th to November 3rd, 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland. More than 200 experts in SG11 (signalling), SG13 (NGN) and SG19 (mobile communication network), where over 30 Korean delegates headed by Mr. Lee Yeong-Ho (the president of ETRI), attended the meeting.

A total of 10 NGN draft recommendations (3 for SG11 and 7 for SG13) were approved during this meeting and two Korea-led recommendations, Y.2262 (PSTN/ISDN emulation and simulation, editor; Dr. Kim Yeong-Jae of TTA) and Y.2013 (Converged service framework, editor; Dr. Hwang Jin-Gyeong of KT), were the first to be adopted as standards led by Korea in relation to NGN.

In addition, it was decided that the 4 contributions presented by Korea, i.e. the standard for IP network evolution to NGN (Kim Yeong-Jae of TTA), managed transmission service standard (Choi Yeong-Sook of KT), network access control standard (Yang Seong-Bo of ICU and Kim Jeong-Yoon of ETRI), and standard for separation of ID and locator in NGN (Yin Min-Gyo of ETRI, Yoo Tae-Wan of ETRI and Lee Seung-Yoon of ETRI), were accepted as new draft recommendation and 7 Korean experts were named as the editors.

With regard to the standardization issued discussed at this NGN-GSI meeting, domestic requirements will be discussed under the leadership of TTA's NGN PG (PG204 chaired by Ham Jin-Ho), reflected in international standards, and  results of international standardization will be quickly established as domestic standards.

On the basis of the outcome of this meeting, Korea is planning to take the lead in international standardization in the NGN sector, and the next NGN-GSI international standardization meeting is slated to be held from January 8th to January 12th, 2007 in Beijing, China.
