Entering ITU Council Membership and Hosting ITU PP

At Guadalajara, Mexico, from the 4th to the 22 th of October, the 18th Plenipotentiary Conference, the top decision-making conference for ICT policies of ITU, was held with participation of about 2,500 representatives from 162 ITU member nations. During this meeting, Korea succeeded in being elected as a council member nation for the sixth consecutive term and named officially to be the host nation for ITU 2014 Plenipotentiary Conference,  acclaimed universally by ITU’s members gathered at the 18th Plenipotentiary Conference.
Since it was elected as an ITU Council member nation(term: 4yrs) for the first time in 1989, Korea has participated in establishment of ITU operations & strategy planning and major policies, through which it has expanded its influence over international society over the past 20 years. The achievement of serving as a ITU council member nation for the sixth consecutive terms and hosting the next Plenipotentiary Conference provides an opportunity to reconfirm Korea's status in ICT area and the endeavor of its experts working on behalf of the nation in various study and working groups at ITU.
The quadrennial ITU Plenipotentiary Conference is the top decision-making conference for ICT policies in international telecommunication. South Korea was selected to be the first asian nation after Japan to host the Conference since the founding of ITU in 1865. By hosting the next Plenipotentiary Conference, it is expected that South Korea will enhance the diplomatic power of ICT and the nation's prestige by presenting its vision for ICT development.
