TTA CR (Cognitive Radio) Standardization Committee Established
TTA (Secretary general Kim Hong-Koo) announced that the 56th TTA Coordination Committee, held on September 27th, 2006, approved the establishment of the CR Project Group (PG) to promote standardization of the CR (Cognitive Radio) sector.

Cognitive radio technology is a smarter, faster, and more efficient way to transmit information to and from fixed, mobile, or other wireless communication devices. A cognitive radio system is aware of its operating environment and automatically adjusts itself to maintain desired communications and thereby efficiently utilizes limited frequency resources.

For this reason, CR technology has been attracting more and more attention from home and abroad in recent years, and it is considered to be the core technology for sharing frequency spectrums along with Ultra Wideband. The US, Canada and Great Britain are making efforts to create new radio communication services by using CR technology to increase spectrum efficiency.

As the usage of spectrum requires close international cooperation, it is expected that advanced countries with CR technology would demand the use of open frequency spectrum on a global scale. Under these circumstances, Korea also needs to actively participate in CR technology standardization in order to deal with those demands.

The CR Project Group aims at developing CR technical requirements and standards for providing diverse multimedia services in the ubiquitous environment, and also plans to take an active part in IEEE 802.22 WRAN WG and ITU-R so that domestic CR technology and standards can be reflected in international standardization.

In addition, the TTA Coordination Committee approved the establishment of the Satellite Broadcasting PG that will be in charge of revising the existing digital satellite broadcasting standards.

With the establishment of the CR PG and the Satellite Broadcasting PG, TTA will obtain experts recommended from TTA members and related agencies to hold the 1st meeting in early November to elect chairman and start its standardization activities.
