The 1st International Meeting to Consolidate M2M Standardization Activities Held

On July 21, at Hotel Novotel, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, TTA hosted an international meeting that is intended to organize a cooperative body for M2M international standardization comprising 60 experts from major standardization agencies around the world (TTA (Korea), CCSA (China), ARIB/TTC (Japan), ATIS/TIA (USA) and ETSI (EU)). In this meeting, the participants exchanged information on current M2M progress in each country and discussed each country’s standpoint, structure, and schedule for a future standardization cooperative body. All the agencies agreed in principle on the establishment of a new M2M standardization body. However, representatives from North America proposed a new structure of M2M organization instead of the existing 3GPP structure. The participants concluded that participation of vertical industries (e.g. Smart grid, u-Health, automobile, etc.) rather than the existing companies in the telecommunication industry is the key to the success of the M2M standardization cooperative body. The major agenda for the next meeting will be how to promote participation of vertical industries, and the specific technical work scope of the M2M standardization cooperative body. The next meeting will be held from the 17th to the 18th of August in Washington D. C., the U.S.A.
