TTA WiBroTM Standard Approved as a Reference Standard for the ITU-R International Standard

TTA (Secretary general Kim Hong-Koo) announced that the WiBro technical standard of Korea is now included in the recommendations of ITU-R SG8, an international standardization organization within the United Nations.

At the ITU-R SG8 general assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland from September 20th, 2006 to September 21st, 2006, the TTA WiBro standard, one of the Mobile-BWA standards, was approved as a reference standard.

IEEE 802.16 WG proposed recommendation works at ITU-R WP8 meeting in March 2005, and at the September 2005 meeting, a liaison statement was sent to standardization organizations around the world, including TTA, requesting each country to propose its own BWA technology.

In response to this request, TTA proposed WiBro at the ITU-R WP8A meeting in March 2006. Also, an agreement that was reached through mutual cooperation between TTA PG302 (chaired by Prof. Hong Dae-Hyoung, Sogang University) and IEEE 802.16 at the IEEE 802.16 meeting in July 2006 was presented at the ITU-R WP8A meeting in September 2006 where it was approved.

Among the mobile BWA recommendations of ITU-R WP8A approved on this occasion, TTA WiBro standard (TTAS.KO-06.0082/R1) was clearly mentioned as a profile that ensures compatibility with the IEEE 802.16 standard.

WiBro is currently the only standard that has been successfully commercialized while guaranteeing compatibility with the IEEE 802.16 standard. Since the WiBro standard was reflected in this ITU-R international standard, it not only positioned itself as an international standard, but also as one of the consideration point when foreign countries attempt to adopt a Mobile-BWA standard.

ITU-R WP8A, an organization that standardizes land mobile telecommunication systems and services except IMT-2000, mostly deals with such areas as satellite, ITS, PPDR and BWA.
