Successful Hosting of ITU-T SG17 International Standardization Conference

TTA (Secretary general Kim Hong-Koo) announced that the meeting of the ITU-T 17th Study Group (SG17) (chaired by Mr Herbert Bertine/US-based Lucent Technologies Inc.), in charge of international standardization in the field of IT security and software, was successfully held between April 19 to April 28 (10 days) in Jeju Island with more than 100 domestic and overseas experts on standards, including Mr. Kim Chi-dong (Director General of MIC Radio Research Laboratory), Mr. Kim Hong-Koo (Secretary General of TTA), Mr. Lee Hong-Sub (CEO of KISA), Mr. Yim Chu-Hwan (President of ETRI), and Mr. Yu Watanabe (Japan KDDI Corporation) present at the meeting.

Also, over 130 standardization experts, including Mr. Chin Byung-Moon (Standardization Department of TTA), the vice-chairman of SG17 and the head of Korean delegation, participated in this meeting and led international standardization in such areas as multicast, security management, biometrics, safe communication service, and anti-spam, and reflected a total of 35 technologies to international standards. Also, this conference resulted in obtaining one additional vice-rapporteur and 5 additional editors for the Korean delegates.

Espcially, Senior Researcher Mr. Park Ju-Yeong (ETRI) and Senior Researcher Ms. Yun Mi-Yeon (KISA) were appointed as the editors of the ‘mobile multicast standard’ and ‘relay system multicast communication security standard' respectively in the area of multicast communication (research project 1), whereas Professor Kim Jeong-Deok (Joongang University) was appointed as the editor and vice-rapporteur of ‘security accident management standard (X.sim)’ in security management area(research project 7).

Meanwhile, in the field of biometrics, Professor Lee Hyeong-Wu (Hanshin University) was named as the editor of the ‘standard for digital signature generation (X.tdk) using bio information’, thereby consolidating the foundation for reflecting the biometric technology of Korea to international standards.

Additionally, the field of safe communication service (research project 9) showed a lot of progress in international standardization, i.e. home network security, mobile security, web service security, and P2P security with Professor Yeom Heung-Ryeol (Soonchunhyang University) playing the central role as a rapporteur. Moreover, Senior Researcher Mr. Lee Jae-Seung (ETRI) was named as the editor of the 'standard of the structure for the protection of service messages (X.websec-3),' which is a new standardization item.

ITU-T SG17, a 'leading IT security group' in ITU-T, has been intensively developing standards related to IT security, and Korea is going to continue to lead international standards in IT security on the basis of the results of this meeting. The next ITU-T SG17 international standardization meeting will be held in Geneva from December 6, 2006 to December 15, 2006.
